Book Review: She’s Not There by Joy Fielding

Genre: Mystery

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars (rounded up to 4 on Goodreads)

When Caroline jets off to Mexico with her husband and two young daughters, she believes they’re heading for a dream vacation.  However, the trip soon becomes her worst nightmare when her youngest daughter is kidnapped from their hotel room.  As years pass, Caroline is unsure whether she will ever be reunited with the daughter she lost.  When a girl calls claiming she may be the missing girl, Caroline is hesitant to get her hopes up.  But she can’t help but wonder, could it really be her?

My favorite part of this book was the surprising conclusion.  I thought I might know who the kidnapper was but was completely surprised when they were revealed.

Although I liked the book overall, there were a couple things that prevented me from giving it a 5 out of 5.  The plot was a little slow at times and didn’t drag me in like other mysteries I’ve read.  It was also hard to read about Caroline’s life following the disappearance of her daughter.  Caroline was left to fend for herself, with no support from her family or workplace.  The scenes with her mother and remaining daughter ranged between frustrating to heart breaking.  I wanted to see one of her family members or co-workers step up and give her the support she desperately needed.

Overall, this was an interesting read, with a surprising conclusion.  I will be sure to keep my eye out for other books by this author in the future.
